| The foundation of Northwoods
English setters can be traced back to top local and national
bloodlines. In a stroke of luck and kismet, Jerry Kolter
bought his first setters from Jack LeClair’s Spring
Garden Kennels in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. These dogs bred
to the best setters from Paul Hauge (Centuria, Wisconsin),
Leroy Peterson (Worthington, Minnesota) and Tom Tracy (Lebanon,
Connecticut) have contributed greatly to the high caliber
of present-day Northwoods setters. In addition to these foundation dogs, Jerry is constantly evaluating current dogs and bloodlines to determine how they may contribute to the improvement of their dogs.
Jerry and Betsy are now producing their fourth generation
of English setters and are intimately familiar with dogs
as far back as the fifth and sixth generations. With this
incredible wealth of knowledge, they are able to make intelligent
breeding decisions and produce puppies with predictable and
desirable traits.
In 1995, Jerry and Betsy produced their
first litter. At the time, they frequently joked about
ribbon colors at field trials. With an obvious preference
for the blue, they began registering their English setters
with the “Blue” prefix.
As much as they enjoy competition and are proud when handling
their own dogs to victories, Jerry and Betsy find it satisfying
that progeny from Northwoods Bird Dogs compete and win
for their owners. Both pointers and setters from their
kennel have won prominent field trials and championship
stakes on both the cover dog and horseback circuit. (See
Field Trials for list of accomplishments.)
Many English setters and pointers from Northwoods Bird Dogs
have been used at professional, wild bird guiding operations
such as Bowen Lodge, Big Country Kennel and others around
the country. The dogs provide high class enjoyment and superior
bird hunting for the clients of these prestigious businesses.
But, most important, Northwoods Bird Dogs clients can boast
of having the quintessential fall hunting experience of shooting
wild birds over their fine setters and pointers. |
